Preparing for your Gastric Sleeve Surgery is an essential step in ensuring a smooth procedure and successful recovery. At Do It Bariatrics, we want to make sure you’re fully prepared, both physically and mentally, for your life-changing journey. Below are the guidelines to follow in the weeks and days leading up to your surgery.

2 to 4 Weeks Before Surgery

As you get closer to your surgery date, it’s important to start adopting healthier habits and preparing your body for the procedure. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Start your pre-op diet: Your surgeon will recommend a specific pre-op diet that you’ll need to follow. This is typically a low-calorie, high-protein diet designed to shrink your liver, making the surgery safer and easier. Depending on your BMI your doctor will recommend the diet you should follow.
  • Quit smoking and alcohol consumption: Both smoking and alcohol can increase complications during and after surgery. If you smoke, it’s essential to stop at least 4 weeks before your surgery. Alcohol should also be avoided during this time.
  • Avoid blood thinners and NSAIDs: Medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain herbal supplements can increase the risk of bleeding. Make sure to consult your surgeon for a full list of medications to avoid.
  • Begin gentle physical activity: If you aren’t already active, now is a great time to begin incorporating gentle exercise, such as walking, into your routine to improve circulation and boost overall health before surgery.
  • Check your Itinerary: If you’re traveling for surgery, ensure that all travel and accommodation arrangements are in place. Do It Bariatrics provides ground transportation from the airport to the hospital, but make sure to double-check your schedule.

1 Week Before Surgery

As the surgery date approaches, more specific preparations need to be made:

  • Prepare your post-surgery care: Set up your home or recovery space to be comfortable and easily accessible. Stock up on liquids, protein shakes, and soft foods that you’ll need post-surgery.

48 Hours Before Surgery

Now that you’re just days away, focus on these critical pre-surgery steps:

  • Follow the liquid diet: You will switch to a clear liquid diet 48 hours before surgery. This includes water, broth, sugar-free gelatin, and electrolyte drinks. The liquid diet helps clear your digestive tract and reduces complications.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water up until midnight the night before surgery. Staying hydrated is essential, but you will need to stop drinking any liquids 8 hours before your surgery time.

The Night Before Surgery

The night before surgery is all about final preparations:

  • Stop eating and drinking: Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before your surgery. This is crucial to avoid complications during anesthesia.
  • Shower and cleanse: Take a shower using antibacterial soap to help reduce the risk of infection. Do not use any lotions, deodorants, perfumes, or makeup after your shower.
  • Get a good night’s sleep: Try to get plenty of rest the night before surgery. Being well-rested can help your body recover more quickly after the procedure.

The Day of Surgery

On the day of surgery, follow these important steps:

  • Wear comfortable clothing: Loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to put on and take off is best. You may also want to bring a change of clothes for your hospital stay.
  • Bring necessary documents: Bring your ID and any documents provided by your surgeon or patient coordinator.
  • Remove all jewelry and piercings: All jewelry, including body piercings, must be removed before the surgery. You should also avoid wearing any contact lenses.

Mental and Emotional Preparation

We understand that surgery can be an emotional experience, and it’s normal to feel nervous or anxious. Here are some tips to help you mentally prepare:

  • Stay positive: Focus on the long-term benefits of the surgery and how it will improve your health and quality of life.
  • Talk to your support team: Stay connected with friends, family, or members of our Facebook support group to share your feelings and receive encouragement.
  • Follow relaxation techniques: If you’re feeling anxious, try deep breathing, meditation, or listening to calming music the day before and the morning of surgery.

What to Expect After Surgery

Once your surgery is complete, the journey is just beginning. We’ll be with you every step of the way, from post-op care in the hospital to long-term follow-ups.

  • Hospital stay: You’ll typically stay at the hospital for 2-3 nights after surgery. During this time, our medical team will monitor your recovery closely.
  • Post-op diet: Following surgery, you will begin a gradual transition from liquids to soft foods. Your surgeon and dietitian will provide specific guidelines for this phase.
  • Follow-up care: Our team will schedule follow-up consultations to ensure your recovery is progressing smoothly. You will also have access to long-term support from our team and our Facebook community.
