Mini Gastric Bypass Pre-Operative Guidelines

Before undergoing your Mini Gastric Bypass surgery, it’s important to carefully follow the pre-operative guidelines to ensure the best possible outcome. These instructions will help prepare your body for the procedure and reduce potential complications.

1. Pre-Operative Diet

Your pre-op diet is essential to shrink the liver and prepare your digestive system for surgery. Follow this diet closely to ensure a smoother procedure.

  • 2-3 Weeks Before Surgery:
    • Begin a high-protein, low-carb diet to reduce liver size.
    • Focus on lean proteins (chicken, fish, tofu), leafy greens, and non-starchy vegetables.
    • Avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and high-fat foods.
  • 48 Hours Before Surgery:
    • Switch to a clear liquid diet. Approved liquids include water, broth, sugar-free drinks, and gelatin.
    • Avoid solid foods, caffeine, and carbonated drinks.
  • 12 Hours Before Surgery:
    • No eating or drinking after midnight before your surgery day, except for small sips of water if instructed to take medication.

2. Medications and Supplements

  • Review your medications with your bariatric team. Some medications may need to be adjusted or stopped before surgery.
  • Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen at least 7 days prior to surgery.
  • Stop taking vitamin E, fish oil, and herbal supplements 2 weeks before surgery.
  • If you have diabetes, consult with your doctor for adjustments to your medications or insulin.

3. Stop Smoking and Alcohol

  • Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery. Smoking can increase the risk of complications, including poor wound healing.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 2 weeks before surgery. It can interfere with your liver’s ability to heal and detoxify.

4. Physical Activity and Hydration

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water daily (at least 64 oz), up until the fasting period before surgery.
  • Continue to be physically active but avoid high-impact activities. Walking and light cardio can help improve recovery time.

5. Preparing for Recovery

  • Arrange for a support person to help you after surgery.
  • Prepare your home for post-operative recovery with easy-to-digest, protein-rich foods, and have your bariatric vitamins ready.
  • Ensure you have a comfortable resting place for when you return home. Consider placing commonly used items within reach, so you can avoid straining yourself after surgery.

6. Day of Surgery Instructions

  • Arrive at the hospital on time, as instructed by your surgical coordinator.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that’s easy to put on and take off.
  • Bring any necessary documents, including ID, and a list of medications you’re currently taking.
  • Remove jewelry, contact lenses, dentures, and body piercings before arriving at the hospital.

7. Follow-Up Care

  • Attend your scheduled pre-op consultation to review any last-minute questions or concerns.
  • Our team will provide you with a detailed post-operative plan, including diet, exercise, and follow-up appointments. Be sure to adhere to this plan to optimize your weight loss and overall success.
