More than a procedure, bariatric surgery provides a fresh start—a tool that empowers patients to take charge of their long-term health. This is why multidisciplinary programs place so much importance on nutrition coaching, follow-up care, and especially ongoing support groups: these elements help patients sustain the lifestyle changes that surgery makes possible.

Now, new evidence published in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases (SOARD) by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) reinforces this approach, showing that support group participation is strongly linked to better weight-loss and self-management outcomes.

What the New ASMBS Systematic Review Found

The systematic review examined 18 studies evaluating whether attending facilitator-led bariatric support groups—in person, hybrid, or online—improves patient outcomes.

Key Findings

Attending support groups is positively associated with greater postoperative weight loss.

Patients who participate consistently show better self-management, including adherence to dietary guidelines, vitamin compliance, and behavior-change practices.

Support groups also help patients feel less isolated and more emotionally supported throughout their weight-loss journey.

However, barriers still exist, including scheduling conflicts, transportation, and lack of virtual options in some programs.

The authors recommend further research, especially comparing the effectiveness of in-person vs. hybrid vs. virtual formats.

In short, the review reinforces what MBS professionals have believed for years:
Support groups are a crucial part of safe, high-quality bariatric care.

Our Own Data: 2024 Do It Bariatrics Patient Follow-Up Outcomes

To better understand how support groups affect our patients, we analyzed 250 cases from 2024 under the care of Dr. Louisiana Valenzuela, MD, FACS.

We compared two groups:

Active Participants
Patients who:

Consistently attended follow-ups with the Do It Bariatrics dietitian, and

Participated in our online community (Facebook support group + virtual check-ins).

Inactive or Minimal Participants
Patients who did not participate in our community and had minimal nutrition follow-up.

Outcome Measured:

% Total Body Weight Loss (TBWL) at 12 months post-op

2024 Weight-Loss Outcomes at Do It Bariatrics

Effect of Dietitian Follow-Up + Support Group Participation (n = 250)

Group

Number of Patients

Average %TBWL at 12 Months

Vitamin Compliance Rate

Reported Emotional Well-Being (Self-Reported)

Active Participants (Regular dietitian follow-ups + Online community)

142

31.4% TBWL

91%

High (78%)

Inactive/Minimal Participants

108

24.7% TBWL

64%

Moderate-Low (42%)

Key Observations

Patients who engaged with both the dietitian and support group achieved 27% better weight loss outcomes.

They also reported greater motivation, fewer episodes of emotional eating, and stronger adherence to postoperative recommendations.

The data align directly with the findings of the ASMBS systematic review, demonstrating that support group participation is not optional—it’s a measurable predictor of success.

Why Support Groups Make Such a Difference

Based on both the ASMBS review and our 2024 outcomes, support groups help because they provide:

1. Accountability

Patients check in regularly about hydration, protein intake, vitamin use, and activity.

2. Emotional Support

Hearing from others who understand your journey reduces isolation and fear.

3. Education in Real Time

Live Q&A with medical staff, nutritionists, and experienced patients helps prevent avoidable complications.

4. Normalization of Struggles

Plateaus, hair shedding, emotional eating—patients realize they’re not alone.

5. A Long-Term Success Mindset

Weight loss surgery is a tool. Support groups help patients actually use it.
