GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound have rapidly become some of the most widely used treatments for obesity and weight loss.

As millions of patients begin using these medications worldwide, researchers are also looking for new ways to better understand how patients experience them outside of controlled clinical trials.

A recent study published in Nature Health used artificial intelligence to analyze more than 410,000 Reddit posts discussing semaglutide and tirzepatide between 2019 and 2025. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science reviewed posts from more than 67,000 users in an effort to identify side effects and symptoms patients were reporting online.

The study found that many commonly recognized side effects appeared frequently in patient discussions, including:

Nausea

Vomiting

Fatigue

Constipation

Diarrhea

These symptoms are already well documented in clinical trials and current medication labeling.

However, researchers also identified additional symptoms that may not yet be fully reflected in existing studies or regulatory documentation, including:

Irregular menstrual cycles

Reproductive-related symptoms

Chills

Hot flashes

Other temperature-related complaints

The researchers emphasized that the study does not prove these medications directly caused those symptoms. Instead, the findings highlight patterns reported by patients themselves that may deserve additional scientific investigation.

One of the study authors explained:

“Clinical trials generally identify the most dangerous side effects of drugs, but they can fail to find what symptoms patients are most concerned about.”

Why Studies Like This Matter

Clinical trials are essential before medications become publicly available, but they do have limitations.

Once a medication begins being used by millions of patients in real-world settings, researchers often continue learning about:

Long-term side effects

Rare complications

Patient-reported symptoms

How medications behave in broader populations

This is particularly important in obesity medicine, where treatments are often used long-term and by patients with different medical conditions and metabolic profiles.

AI-assisted analysis of patient discussions online is now becoming an additional tool researchers can use to better understand patient experiences outside of traditional medical environments.

Obesity Treatment Requires Long-Term Thinking

Obesity is a chronic disease associated with serious health risks, including:

Type 2 Diabetes

Hypertension

Sleep apnea

Cardiovascular disease

Fatty liver disease

Joint disease

Because obesity itself affects long-term health and life expectancy, treatment decisions should involve careful consideration of both effectiveness and long-term safety.

GLP-1 medications may continue to play an important role in obesity treatment for many patients. However, it is also important to understand that newer medical therapies continue being evaluated as more long-term data becomes available.

Bariatric Surgery Remains the Most Effective Long-Term Treatment for Obesity

While weight loss medications continue evolving, bariatric surgery remains the most effective and durable treatment currently available for obesity and metabolic disease.

Procedures such as:

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Revisional Bariatric Surgery

have decades of clinical evidence supporting:

Significant sustained weight loss

Improvement or remission of obesity-related diseases

Long-term metabolic benefits

Reduced obesity-related mortality

Modern bariatric surgery is also safer and more standardized than many patients realize, particularly when performed by experienced bariatric teams in properly equipped hospitals.

Every patient is different, and obesity treatment should always be individualized based on medical history, goals, and long-term health considerations.

If you are considering bariatric surgery as part of your obesity treatment journey, our team at Do It Bariatrics is available to help you better understand your options and determine whether surgery may be appropriate for you.
